After more than a decade of delays, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has begun the long, slow work of restoring the century-old Lankershim train station in North Hollywood. What the building will ultimately be used for remains unknown, but at least initial work on restoration of the decrepit 1896 structure is under way after a dozen years of frustrated attempts to rehabilitate the landmark.
Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday proposed deeper cuts to safety net programs, higher education, courts and other critical government programs to close a projected budget deficit that has grown to $15.7 billion - nearly double his January estimate. Brown said he wants to cover much of the shortfall by temporarily raising income taxes on the wealthiest Californians and boosting sales taxes.
Sherman Oaks residents are gearing up for a fight over a proposal to build a nearly 400-unit apartment building, grocery store and shops overlooking one of the nation's busiest freeway interchanges. 21-Year-Old Simi Valley Woman Dies After Chatsworth Collision
A 21-year-old Simi Valley woman died early Monday morning in Chatsworth when she lost control of the car she was driving, slammed into a delivery truck, and then was hit by oncoming traffic. A witness told police that the 6:25 a.m. collision occurred when the woman, identified as Brandi Todd, was driving her silver, 2007 Toyota Scion north on De Soto Avenue at about 65 mph.
Calling it a small dent in the city's war on gun violence, Los Angeles officials announced Monday that they collected 1,673 firearms in the fourth annual gun buyback over the weekend. The city had $200,000 in vouchers that Ralphs grocery stores donated for this year's program, in which 791 handguns - including a matching pair of pistols valued at $2,000 - 527 rifles, 302 shotguns and 53 assault weapons were turned in to the Los Angeles Police Department.
