SCROLLING through the pages of Los Angeles city salaries, it's hard to reconcile those generous wages with the unwillingness of employee unions to make concessions that would save precious taxpayer dollars and important city services.

The long list, released last week by City Controller Wendy Greuel, is eye-opening. Management analysts routinely make $70,000, $80,000, even $100,000 annual salaries. Painters earn as much as $80,000. Political operatives - or, council aides and deputy mayors - make around $150,000. And, if you're one of two chiefs of staff to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, you're getting paid $194,000 - thousands more than the elected members of the City Council.
