Los Angeles Unified School District officials said Monday they want to expand an early retirement program to include 2,600 nonteaching employees, a move that could save the jobs of hundreds of younger workers.

Similar to a plan offered to teachers and administrators last month, the program would give retiring classified workers 40 percent of their annual 2009-10 salary as a bonus that would be doled out over at least five years.
