WHEN you file your taxes next week, you will be asked to report your online purchases on which you paid no sales tax. Most people ignore this line. Why wouldn't they? There's no incentive to do so and no punishment if you don't.

It's an ineffective system to say the least, which is why some legislators are seeking to require that online retailers who sell to Californians collect and pay California tax on in-state sales even if they don't have a physical store in the state. The bill, AB 155, would impose a "use tax" on these sales and is currently going through committee hearings.
