THE federal government's report last week of higher-than- expected job growth since the beginning of the year coupled with an optimistic survey of San Fernando Valley businesses is good news.

While the economy faces many serious challenges, these are hopeful signs that recovery is occurring, however slowly. Some 290,000 new jobs were added to payrolls in April, the Labor Department reported - a spike that experts hadn't seen coming. Locally, about 80 percent of Valley businesses polled said they expected their revenues to remain steady, or even increase, over the next 12 months.
